Classic teach old powers a lesson

ANDREW MUCHINERIPI, Johannesburg | Monday 12.30pm.

MAKHULONG Stadium in the East Rand township of Tembisa may have been a Castle Premiership venue for just a few months, but it is fast gaining a reputation as a ground best avoided by visiting teams.

Only Manning Rangers have beaten the newly-promoted club there this season and draw specialists Wits University became the latest victims when losing 2-1 after snatching a sixth-minute lead through Alois Bunjira.

Classic, whose officials wisely resisted the temptation to seek big-name players and coaches after arriving in the Premiership via the MTN First Division, responded in typical fashion by taking the game to the Clever Boys.

Substitute Tumelo Mofokeng made an instant impact by levelling after 69 minutes and Thato Maleka grabbed the winner soon after to put the club into second position, four points behind Sundowns.

Hellenic occupy fourth place after drawing 1-1 with mid-table African Wanderers at Kings Park where Alexis Motaung put the visitors ahead in first-half injury-time and Ronald Mkhondwane levelled.

Ajax Cape Town recorded their third consecutive victory by defeating Moroka Swallows 2-1 at Bellville through early and late goals from senior midfielder David Modise. Patrick Ningiza was on target for the lowly Birds.

Bush Bucks moved off the bottom rung of the standings thanks to a 1-0 home win over AmaZulu courtesy of a 69th-minute goal from former Vaal Professionals player Peter Khoabane.

Defender Kaitano Tembo was the unlikely two-goal hero as SuperSport United drew 2-2 with fellow-strugglers Free State Stars at rain-lashed Caledonian Stadium. James Mokoena and Bunene Ngaduana scored for the visitors.
