PRESIDENT Thabo Mbeki on Friday told a special parliamentary debate on the next millennium that he wants peace and democracy to settle on Africa in the new year. Mbeki urged the the two houses of parliament, sitting for the last time this year, that 2000 should be dedicated to working towards the African Renaissance — peace and development for the war-ravaged continent. “We must join with others on our continent to strive so that by the time the year ahead of us comes to an end, power has been, or is irrevocably being returned to, the people in all countries on our continent,” he said.
