MOZAMBICANS SET TO RE-ELECT CHISSANO

MOZAMBICANS look set to re-elect President Joaquim Chissano at weekend elections, but he could lose the parliamentary majority that has helped him jump start the economy after a 16-year civil war. Although opinion polls are hard to come by, local political analysts see the 60-year old Chissano as a clear favourite to win the presidency, given his strong profile both at home and abroad and steady economic growth. His Frelimo party, however, could struggle in simultaneous parliamentary elections against former civil war foes Renamo, now the official opposition. This has raised the possibility of Chissano as president with a hostile parliament controlled by the opposition. Chissano says a split would be bad for Mozambique, struggling to overcome the legacy of war and failed Marxist economic policies.
