LAGOS’ GOVERNOR SURVIVES ASSASSINATION BID

AN armed gang opened fire on a convoy carrying the governor of Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos, but he escaped after guards shot and killed four assailants, the city’s police chief said on Monday. Governor Bola Tinubu’s convoy was returning to his official residence in the early hours of Sunday morning from an inspection tour when it was blocked and fired on, Lagos Police Commissioner Mike Okiro said. Okiro, confirming press reports, said the governor was unharmed in the attack during which his car was hit by bullets. He said it was “too early” to say if it was an assassination attempt but said seven people arrested at the scene claimed to have been sent to the area by a militant group “to look for armed robbers”. Monday’s Guardian newspaper had said Tinubu’s car was “riddled” with bullets and reported that guards killed four of the attackers. According to the daily, five others were arrested.
