SOUTH Africa plans to increase the capacity of the showpiece FNB Stadium in Johannesburg from 80000 to 110000 if South Africa are chosen to host the 2006 World Cup.
A bid committee spokesman said minimal expansion and upgrading is needed at eight other venues and new stadiums are planned for Brakpan near Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the northern town of Pietersburg.
Numerous grounds used for the 1995 Rugby World Cup are listed, including Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Kings Park in Durban, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, Boet Erasmus in Port Elizabeth and Newlands in Cape Town.
Africa has never staged the quadrennial showcase of international football and South Africa, England and Germany are considered the strongest contenders with Brazil and Morocco outsiders.
World governing body FIFA will decide who succeeds Japan and South Korea as hosts at an executive committee meeting in Zurich next July.
