THE town council of the Afrikaner seperatist community Orania has been ordered by the Delimitation Board to form a unified municipality with Hopetown and Strydenburg. Orania’s spokesman, Carel Boshoff, said on Friday afternoon that within such a municipality the community of Orania would be in a minority and be frustrated in its efforts for independence. Boshoff said that this action by the Delimitation Board conflicted with the understanding that Orania could rightly be regarded as a community with a common cultural and language heritage, which — in terms of Article 235 of the Constitution — could claim self-determination within a territorial entity and at an appropriate level. Boshoff called on Afrikaners to re-establish themselves in an area such as Orania, where small numbers could make a big difference. He said even if the present delimitation proposals go through, if as few as 3000 Afrikaner families resettled in the area an Afrikaner majority could be created.
