THE death toll on South African roads since the beginning of December passed the 800 mark on Tuesday, Arrive Alive said in a statement in Pretoria. The traffic safety campaign said 810 lives have been lost in 566 accidents. Figures show that KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest death toll with 122 fatalities. The death toll in the other provinces was: Free State (119), Eastern Cape (104), Gauteng (103), North West (86), Western Cape (82), Northern Province (79), Mpumalanga (77), Northern Cape (38). Arrive Alive said 336 of the dead were passengers, 232 were pedestrians and 212 were drivers.
