Terbrugge out, Kirsten drops himself

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Cape Town | Thursday 2.00pm.

PACE bowler David Terbrugge will miss the rest of the season with a stress fracture of the left ankle.

Opening batsman Gary Kirsten has asked to stand down from the one-day series against England and Zimbabwe because ”he is not on top of his game at the moment”, selection convenor Rushdie Magiet said on Thursday.

South Africa’s selectors have made three changes to their 14-man squad for the second half of the triangular tournament.

Middle order batsmen Dale Benkenstein has been dropped in favour of Neil McKenzie. Hard-hitting Boland captain Louis Koen has taken Kirsten’s place.

The third change involves a surprise recall for Northerns pace bowler Steve Elworthy, 35 next month, in place of Terbrugge.

Free State fast bowler Dewald Pretorius will join Eastern Province seamer Garnett Kruger in the squad as non-playing members to experience the atmosphere of international cricket.

South Africa lead the series with two wins in three matches while England have a win and a loss from two matches. Zimbabwe have played, and lost, just one match. Each team plays six matches before a one-match final between the top two sides.
