US BEAT ZIM TO REACH QUARTERS

THE US, led by new captain John McEnroe, fought back from 2-1 down to beat Zimbabwe 3-2 on Sunday and reach the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup. Cup debutant Chris Woodruff applied the killer touch after world number one Andre Agassi had beaten Byron Black in straight sets, knocking off Wayne Black 6-3 6-7 6-2 6-4. Agassi hauled the US back on level terms with a 6-2 6-3 7-6 victory over Wayne’s elder brother Byron. Struggling in the high altitude, Agassi took just over two hours to beat the Zimbabwean number one on the fast indoor court. By winning that rubber, Agassi became the second most successful American Davis Cup player by overtaking the record of the late Arthur Ashe. But he felt the effects of his efforts and was sick on court side after the match. No further details were available of his condition. Bouyed by the manner of Agassi’s triumph Woodruff, beaten in straight sets by Byron Black on Friday, came out all guns blazing and snatched the opening set 6-3 to silence the partisan Harare crowd.
