UNEMPLOYED miners armed with knives and spears on Wednesday attacked a group of miners going to work near Johannesburg, injuring 21 of them, police said. The attack took place at the East Rand Propriety Mine (ERPM) east of Johannesburg. “There were 200 or 300 miners who we believe used to work at the mine and they attacked miners who were on their way to their shift with pangas (long knives) and spears,” police spokesman Captain Andy Pieke told Reuters. He said 21 workers were injured and 15 of them were taken to hospital. One was in a serious condition after being stabbed with a spear. The South African Police Service said in a statement that police had restored calm. The conflict erupted after an anti-foreigner protest turned ugly, with unemployed South African miners attacking their Mozambican counterparts who had work.
