THE United States is evacuating all its employees and contractors from northern Namibia because of the worsening security situation, and tells its citizens to stay away from the region. “US government affiliated personnel there are being relocated and US citizens in the area are urged to depart,” the State Department said in a statement. Included in the warning are the entire Kavango and Caprivi regions that border Angola. The government and Unita rebels are engaged in the area in a long-running civil war that often spills over into Namibia, the statement said. Earlier this month at least 20 people were killed in an attack by forces from Unita (Union for the Total Independence of Angola) on the northern Namibian town of Santa Clara.
