TWO women have lodged complaints of sexual harassment against one of Parliament’s senior managers. Frene Ginwala, the Speaker of Parliament, said on Tuesday that the women had been assured that they would be protected, and the case was under investigation. Media reports that several women had been abused by the manager, but were afraid to come forward in fear of intimidation, have been circulating since Sunday. Ginwala declined to elaborate on the nature of the complaints, saying only that they did not include rape. ”Sensationalising the issue and reports in the media of rapists or sex pests running loose in Parliament are not helpful,” she said. The case is not the first of its kind Parliament has had to deal with – last year a senior manager was dismissed after being found guilty of sexual harassment. Ginwala said the manager had not been suspended, but had requested to go on leave. She expected investigations to be wrapped up within a month.
