DEON POTGIETER, Johannesburg | Saturday 11.00pm.
CORRIE Sanders wrapped up the third defence of his World Boxing Union heavyweight world title in 63 seconds on Saturday night at Carnival City.
In that time he threw his opponent Al “Ice” Cole to the Canvas on two occasions and then bludgeoned the hapless American mercilessly.
The referee stepped in and stopped the fight as the former undefeated International Boxing Federation cruiser-weight world champion could not defend himself.
With this incredible stoppage of such a formidable opponent, Sanders looks to have the beating of any heavyweight in the world.
Promoter Rodney Berman said after the fight that he would do everything possible to try and get Sanders his much vaunted match with Lennox Lewis for the universal heavyweight world title.
He added that he believed that Sanders was the true heavyweight world champion.
In an earlier bout Dingaan Thobela showed that the “Rose of Soweto” still has plenty to offer, when he out-pointed Soon Botes for the super-middleweight national title.
Thobela, who suffered a cut above the right eye as a result of an intentional head-but in the fourth round, dropped Botes at the end of the eighth and again in the last round.
Also on the bill, Sebastian Rothman easily out-pointed American Damon Reed to make the first successful defence of his WBU cruiser-weight world title.
