A FARMWORKER died and another was hospitalised after they were whipped by other farmworkers for allegedly stealing tomatoes, South African police said on Saturday. Police spokeswoman Sergeant Erica Roos said the two workers, both Mozambicans, were taken by colleagues on Friday into a storeroom on a farm near Brits, a rural town in South Africa’s North West province, and questioned about the theft of tomatoes. Their hands were tied and bags pulled over their faces before they were beaten with rawhide whips. Later Friday night, one of the men died of his injuries and the other was taken to hospital.
