TWO South African journalists and a Kenyan reporter have been named joint overall winners of the CNN African Journalist of the Year Award. SABC producer/cameraman team Jacques Pauw and Adil Bradlow and Kenyan Wanja Njunguna-Githinji were awarded first prize in the television category. They beat more than 1000 other African entrants. As part of their award Pauw and Bradlow will each choose between a place in CNN’s month-long television training programme in Atlanta or a week-long trip to the 20th anniversary of the CNN World Report Conference, also in Atlanta. The winners also receive a cash prize, computers and cellphones. Sophia Phirippides of M-Net’s Carte Blanche and Shenid Bhayroo shared joint second prize in the television category. Journalist Charlene Smith was awarded second prize in the print media category for her account in the Mail & Guardian of her rape ordeal last year.
