DOZENS INJURED IN NIGERIAN CLASHES

DOZENS of striking workers at a textile company in the northern Nigerian city of Kano were injured and ten arrested after invading company premises and clashing with the police, officials said on Thursday. The Lebanese-owned Angels Spinning and Dyeing Company last month announced plans to sack around 1500 of its 4000 staff in Kano. Workers went on strike to demand a halt to the plans and called for wage increases and shorter working hours. A company spokesman told reporters the workers had refused to wait while the management looked into their demands and had smashed machines and office equipment.
