ACT Brumbies run riot against Cats

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Canberra | Saturday 4.20pm.

THE ACT Brumbies equalled the biggest win in Super 12 history on Saturday when they thrashed the Cats 64-0.

The Brumbies ran in nine unanswered tries to completely overwhelm their opponents and match the biggest winning margin in Super 12 which they set against the Northern Bulls a year ago.

Australian test backrow forward Owen Finegan scored three tries while Stirling Mortlock, Joe Roff, Graeme Bond, Mark Bartholomeusz, Andrew Walker and replacement Ipolito Fenukitau scored one each.

Mortlock also landed eight conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 24 points.

The Brumbies’ win is their fourth in succession against South African teams this season and lifted them into third place in the standings at the halfway stage of the tournament.

Showing no signs of the distractions of their recent trip to South Africa where five ACT players were disciplined for off-field behaviour, the Brumbies took control from the outset and raced to a 38-0 lead by halftime.

The Cats, who have lost four matches on the road after winning their first two at home, were unable to contain the home side as they continued their try-scoring spree after the break. — Reuters
