JOHANNESBURG authorities are positioning 12 surveillance cameras at crime hotspots around the city centre in an attempt to reduce crime. The R4 million monitoring unit represents a joint venture between Business Against Crime, the Gauteng provincial government, police, Central Johannesburg Partnership and the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council. The cameras will be able to track the movements of any person within a 2km range. They will be linked by fibre-optic cable to a 24-hour control room, where they will be operated by specially trained operators. When the cameras were installed in Cape Town and Durban, crime was slashed by about 80%.
