SABC EXECS OPT FOR DEMOTIONS

TWO top SABC executives have opted for demotions rather than being fired. Chief executive of corporate affairs Thaninga Shope and chief executive of television Molefe Mokgatle will be redeployed to market-related portfolios, an SABC spokesman said. The two executives were found guilty by an internal disciplinary hearing for failing to comply with the corporation’s financial control procedures. The auditing firm KPMG recommended to the SABC that the two should be disciplined. The firm’s report found that Mokgatle had overspent on the soccer programme Dream Team, which he bought for about R42000 per half-hour, instead of the normal R27000 per hour. Shope failed to follow laid-down financial procedures with her African Renaissance projects when she was general manager of SABC2.
