INDIA CANCELS BENEFIT MATCHES

SIX charity and benefit matches involving Indian, South African and Sri Lankan players have been called off following the recent match-fixing controversy, after the United Cricket Board of South Africa said it would not send players to the sub-continent. The matches, to be played next month, Ratnakar Shetty, joint secretary of the Bombay Cricket Association, said. The only one of the planned series still to go ahead will be a benefit match for former Indian test batsman Yashpal Sharma in New Delhi. It will include only former and present Indian cricketers. The UCB decision follows the furore over the admission of former captain Hansie Cronje that he accepted money from bookmakers.
