ZIM SHRUGS OFF UK ARMS EMBARGO

ZIMBABWE on Thursday shrugged off Britain’s decision to place an embargo on the country for the supply of military hardware and vehicles. Britain, in response to the pre-election violence and the illegal occupation of white-owned farms, announced Wednesday it would refuse any new applications for the purchase of weapons and spare parts from Zimbabwe. But the minister said new suppliers could be found for spare parts for military Hawk jet fighters and Land Rovers for the country’s police force. “They’re not the only manufacturers of those vehicles. If they don’t supply us, we can get them from somewhere else,” said Information Minister Chen Chimutengwende. “We can get special prices from other suppliers.”
