FIGHTING broke out early on Friday in northeast Democratic of Republic of Congo between troops from Rwanda and Uganda, who are supposed to be allied against President Laurent Kabila. Five people have died in the fighting, which began around 4.00am in the city of Kisangani, according to Lieutenant Colonel Akhram Hossein of the UN mission in the country. Hossein said hostilities began with shelling by the Ugandans, which drew a response from the Rwandans. Troops from the two countries, which back different rebel groups in the DRC, clashed in Kisangani last August with the loss of some 300 lives. Uganda and Rwanda then agreed to demilitarise the area. However, Uganda has since been accused of boosting its military presence in Kisangani.
