YOUTH finally gained the upper hand over experience during the final round of the R125000 Pietersburg Classic, as 22-year-old Zimbabwean Mark Cayeux powered to a bogey-free eight-under-par 64, including a blistering inward loop of 30, and a four-shot victory over 35-year-old Dean van Staden at the latest Vodacom Tour stop. Cayeux’s round gave him a 14-under-par total of 202, with Van Staden, who had a 71, on 206, one better than the young trio of Ulrich van den Berg, Jason Vaughan and Richard Fulford. Overnight leader Justin Hobday faded with a closing 74 to finish six off the pace, although that wasn’t nearly as spectacular a collapse as the one Mark Murless suffered. Lying two behind Hobday overnight after a pair of 68s, Murless went out in five-over-par 41, a stretch which, amazingly, included an eagle three at the seventh. He began with a double bogey and completed the outward nine with a horrible triple-bogey seven, after topping his drive. For Cayeux, who picked up a cheque for R19625, it was a third Vodacom Tour victory in as many seasons, after he won the Zambian Open in 1998 and the Stenham Royal Swazi Sun Open early last year.
