SHANE Warne’s first season in English cricket has, so far, been a humbling experience. The Australian test spinner, recently voted one of the Five Cricketers of the Century in a Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack poll, currently leads the “Battle of the Bunnies” – a contest to find the worst first-class batsman in the country. Warne has scored four consecutive ducks for Hampshire – getting out to four of the 11 balls he has faced in County Championship Division One. His record is even worse than annual batting novices such as Phil Tufnell and Devon Malcolm. Tim de Lisle, editor of wisden.com which devised the contest, said: “He’s usually a decent lower-order batsman coming in at number eight for the best country in the world. During the winter he twice came close to a first test century, making 86 against both Pakistan and India.”
