THE Department of Correctional Services will probe a news report that jailed former cleric Allan Boesak received preferential treatment in jail, just days after he started a three year sentence for fraud. The investigation comes after it was reported that Boesak and his wife Elna were granted a “contact visit” at Malmesbury Prison near Cape Town. The Sunday Times reported on Sunday that Willem Berg, the prison’s deputy director, denied that the Boesak’s were given preferential treatment and said that Boesak’s privileges will be restricted until his status is determined. Officials said that this may take three to six months. Johan Pienaar, a spokesman for Correctional Services, said that it is impossible for Boesak to be granted special privileges because resentment among other prisoners will make the prison “ungovernable.”
