WORLD Cup champions Australia will host the Springboks in the first-ever test match played indoors, the Australian Rugby Union announced on Friday. The match will take place at Melbourne’s Colonial Stadium on July 8 after both countries agreed to close the retractable roof. “Both coaches have agreed to it, so Melbourne will go into the history books as the venue for the first indoor rugby test,” ARU boss John O’Neill said. July’s match will be the first between Australia and South Africa since their epic World Cup semifinal which the Wallabies won in extra time. It will also be the first of three the two countries will play this year for the inaugural Nelson Mandela Cup. The ARU had been negotiating with the former South African president to attend the opening match but said Mandela had told them he would be unable to attend.
