SOUTH AMERICA TO BACK SA 2006 BID

SOUTH Africa’s bid to host the 2006 World Cup is set to get a strong boost from South American nations, who will flock to its cause on the understanding that African countries will then vote for a Brazilian World Cup in 2010, the London Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The deal, to be sealed next week by soccer chiefs from South Africa and Brazil, will see South Africa get votes from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay to perk up its bid. Brazil is also bidding for the 2006 World Cup, but has little chance of winning and could put its challenge back four years, when it would get reciprocal support from African nations. Brazilian campaign manager and former soccer star “Zico has said Brazil is prepared to withdraw on the basis that CAF supports them in 2010,” South African campaign director Danny Jordan was quoted as saying.
