I TOOK MONEY FOR INFORMATION, SAYS WOOLMER

FORMER South African cricket coach Bob Woolmer said on Wednesday that he received money for information he supplied to Graham Cowdrey a professional bookmaker in England. Woolmer said in Port Elizabeth: “A few of us who were not involved at all as players or in any other capacity in a County match, kept Chris Cowdrey’s brother, Graham, informed about this match. “Afterwards, everyone received a sum of money for the information,” said Woolmer, a former English Test player, at the launch of his book “Woolmer on Cricket.” “We thought nothing of it and it had nothing to do with match-fixing. It therefore surprises me that a lot of people suddenly remember something suspicious about this or that match,” Woolmer said in reference to the King Commission probe into alleged match-fixing. “South African cricket must keep calm. I hope and believe that the King commission will clear everything up. I have no doubts whatsoever that no South African player has been involved in match fixing,” said Woolmer. “The King commission’s investigation is of the utmost importance for world cricket, because the report of the investigation in Pakistan hurt,” he said. Woolmer reiterated his support for shamed former Proteas skipper Hansie Cronje, saying: “Look, Hansie was wrong to take money from a bookie for information that he gave, but he has assured me that he was never involved in match fixing.” “He knows he let his country down and behaved badly and is very upset about that. However, he mustn’t just lie down,” Woolmer said.
