OAU URGES RAPID UN DEPLOYMENT

THE Organisation of African Unity said on Tuesday it had called on the United Nations to speed up the deployment of a peacekeeping force inside Eritrea’s border with Ethiopia. The UN force, acting under the aegis of the OAU, was provided for in a deal Asmara and Addis Ababa signed June 18 to halt a two-year old war. Under the accord, the force will deploy in a 25-kilometer (15.5 mile) wide strip of land running the length of the border, which is about 1000 km long. OAU ambassadors at a meeting of the pan-African body’s Central Organ of Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution, called on both parties to “scrupulously respect the terms of the accord,” according to an OAU statement released on Tuesday. Delegations from both sides are due to resume indirect talks in Algiers early next month. Issues such as the size of the force and the nationality of its soldiers have yet to be finalised.
