WESTERHOF QUITS ZIM

DUTCH coach Clemens Westerhof has parted ways with Zimbabwe one week after a humiliating World Cup loss in Guinea, according to media reports on Monday. The Herald quoted Zimbabwe Football Association vice-chairman Vicent Pamire saying Westerhof had been fired from his $30000-a-month post after less than two years in charge. Westerhof resigned, claimed the Daily News, after the public and media criticism that followed a 3-0 thrashing by Guinea in the opening round of group matches for the 2002 finals in Japan and South Korea. He has been linked with the national coach post in South Africa, where Trott Moloto is under severe pressure after Nike Cup losses against hosts United States, Mexico and the Republic of Ireland this month. Having steered Nigeria to the African Nations Cup title and the World Cup in 1994, Westerhof made little impact, failing to win any trophies with top clubs Sundowns of South Africa and Ismailia of Egypt. Zimbabwe also failed to sparkle under the outspoken coach and assistant Misheck Marimo has been promoted for an African Nations Cup eliminator in the Seychelles this weekend.
