CRONJE HEARINGS TO RESUME IN OCTOBER

THE King commission of inquiry, set up to probe corruption in South African cricket after Proteas captain Hansie Cronje admitted to bribe taking, is to hold a second and final round of public hearings beginning on October 2. Commission secretary John Bacon said it had not yet been decided whether Cronje would be recalled to give more evidence, what other witnesses would be called or how long the hearings will last. Bacon said commission head retired Judge Edwin King was busy putting the final touches to his interim report, which has to be handed to President Thabo Mbeki by August 11. Meanwhile the commission is still trying to access tapes of conversations Cronje had with bookmakers made by the Indian police, which exposed his involvement in illicit dealings.
