TWO KwaZulu-Natal policemen arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the death of ANC MP Bheki Mkhize have appeared in the Empangeni Regional Court. Captain Zeblon Dlamini, 39, and Sergeant Phiwa Nkosi Magwaza, 39, appeared on Thursday, charged with murder. Dlamini was also charged with defeating the ends of justice — according to provincial Independent Complaints Directorate head, Stix Mdladla. The two appeared briefly and the case was remanded to Monday when they will appear for a bail application together with Inspector Bernard Buthelezi, 42, who was arrested on a charge of murder on the day Mkhize was killed. The latest arrests were effected by ICD investigators on Tuesday. The policemen were charged on Wednesday. The case was moved from Mahlabatini to Empangeni last week for security reasons. These special arrangemetns were necessary, said ICD head for KwaZulu-Natal, Stix Mdladla. Mkhize was killed on July 30 when 13 members of the Ulundi public order police unit raided his house in Mahlabatini in KwaZulu-Natal, allegedly after receiving information that he was hiding illegal weapons there. During the raid Mkhize was shot in the head with an R5 rifle. A police inspector was arrested on a murder charge shortly afterwards and has appeared in court.
