US President Bill Clinton has praised Tanzania for its efforts to help bring peace to neighbouring Burundi and carry out economic reform at home. Clinton, the first US president to set foot in Tanzania, said he wanted to encourage more foreign investment there. Clinton paid tribute to Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa as a ”champion of peace”, and lauded the way he had not allowed the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya to change Tanzania’s policy of tolerance. Clinton said the US wanted to support Tanzania in its efforts to deal with the current drought and said Washington would also try to help both Tanzania and Kenya deal with their ”significant refugee problem”. – Reuters
