SA’S FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT, SAYS REPORT

ABOUT three-quarters of South Africans are positive the future would be happy for all citizens – but decreasing numbers of minority groups say they are “confident or positive” in a national poll conducted by market researchers Markinor. In its biannual survey, which coincides with the South African Human Rights Commission’s four-day conference on racism in Johannesburg, Markinor says only three in 10 white South Africans think race relations are improving. The report says the most likely cause of this negativity is that whites and coloureds, together with Indians, are probably experiencing alienation grounded in their perception of discrimination. White and Indian groups also felt that standards and levels of personal safety are deteriorating, resulting from a lack of confidence in government abilities and services. The mostly black supporters of the African National Congress and Pan Africanist Congress indicated “overwhelmingly” that they felt the country was moving in the right direction
