STONE-THROWING crowds have demanded that police surrender to them a white farmer accused of dragging a black man to death behind his truck. Farmer Pieter Odendaal, 44, appeared briefly in a Sasolburg court on a charge of murder in connection with the killing of Mosoko Rampuru, 37, who was found dead on his farm late last month with a piece of wire attached to his ankle. Witnesses told police they had seen Odendaal’s truck dragging what appeared to be a human body. Rampuru’s body showed signs of having been dragged across the ground. The case was adjourned to September 28 and Odendaal, who was not asked to enter a plea, was kept in custody. His lawyers asked that he be sent for psychiatric evaluation. Outside the court, a crowd including local farmworkers shouted at police, demanding that Odendaal be surrendered to them. armoured police trucks came under a hail of stones and bottles as they took up positions between the crowd and the court. – Reuters
