MTN TO LAY OPTIC CABLE IN UGANDA

UGANDA’S top mobile phone operator, MTN, plans to install an optic fibre line in Kampala next month, a move it said would lower telecommunications costs and attract new investment. MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer Thomas Bragaw said the company would invest $11m over the next 12 months in the project which would initially cover the central business district and industrial areas and would reach the rest of the country on demand. ”Uganda will be the first country in Africa to have optic fibre services delivered door-to-door,” Bragaw said, comparing it with South Africa where the service was available on demand. MTN Uganda is a subsidiary of South Africa’s MTN, which is owned by the Johannesburg-listed M-Cell. In the space of two years MTN Uganda has invested $150m to become the country’s leading telecommunications firm with more than 110000 subscribers to its cellular network. – Reuters
