THREE TUTSI PARTIES TO CONSULT MANDELA ON BURUNDI PEACE ACCORD

REPRESENTATIVES of three Tutsi parties which did not sign Burundi’s peace accord have travelled to South Africa to meet the accord’s mediator, Nelson Mandela. Officials of the Independent Party of Workers (PIT), the Union for Democracy and Economic and Social Development (RADDES) and the National Alliance for Law and Economic Development (ANADDE) are to “consult” with the former South African president. Burundi radio said the warring parties “demand a clear ceasefire procedure before putting down their signature.” The Burundi agreement, aimed at ending seven years of civil warfare between ethnic Hutsis and Tutsis, was signed in Arusha, Tanzania by most of the warring parties on August 28 after intense negotiations. Two leading guerrilla groups and four small Tutsi parties have refused to sign, but the president of one small party, the Social Democrat Party (PSD), has left for Tanzania to add his signature to the agreement. – AFP
