LIONS AND BULLS FINED OVER QUOTAS

The South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu) has fined two of its member unions after finding them guilty of breaching regulations regarding quotas for black players. According to Sarfu rules, two black players must be on the field at all times during Currie Cup matches. A black player may only be replaced with a white player if he has an injury, and not for tactical purposes. The Blue Bulls were found guilty because wing Rayno Hendricks was tactically replaced by a white player despite not suffering from an injury in their match against Border. The Golden Lions were found guilty of replacing Conrad Jantjes with a white player in their game against the Cheetahs. Jantjes was also not injured at the time. The Lions were fined R50 000, of which R20 000 was suspended, and also have the threat of having four log points deducted for a repeat offence before the Currie Cup semifinals. The Blue Bulls were fined R75 000 and the forfeiture of four log points, of which R30 000 and the deduction of log points were suspended for the same time period.
