THE new prime minister of Mauritius, Anerood Jugnauth, and the 23 members of his government have been sworn into office in the presence of President Cassam Uteem. At the head of an alliance with Paul Berenger’s Mauritian Militant Movement, Jugnauth’s Militant Socialist Movement won a sweeping victory in a general election last week, obtaining 54 of 62 contested seats in the national assembly. “The government’s priority is to give confidence back to local and international investors and to relaunch the economy,” Jugnauth said. Under an electoral pact, Berenger is due to serve as Jugnauth’s deputy prime minister for three years, at which point he will assume the leadership of the government for the remainder of the five-year mandate. – AFP
