IVORIAN MARCHERS DENOUNCE ”MEDDLING”

SEVERAL thousand people have marched in Ivory Coast’s main city to denounce foreign interference in its transition to civilian rule after a coup last December. The march coincided with claims by a fugitive member of the ruling junta that soldiers detained after a September 18 attack on army ruler Robert Guei’s home had been killed in custody. A visiting Organisation of African Unity (OAU) delegation urged Ivory Coast this week to hold parliamentary elections before a planned October 22 presidential poll and said it should seek a compromise on who should be allowed to run for president. Demonstrators carried national white, green and orange flags and banners bearing slogans such as ”Halt the international plot”, ”No to the OAU diktat” and ”Ivory Coast for Ivorians”. – Reuters
