THE African National Congress is to announce which senior party leaders it would like redeployed as mayors of the country’s main cities, but the list is said not to include cabinet ministers. ANC Western Cape MPL Lynn Brown has been tipped for Cape Town, Port Elizabeth’s current mayor Nceba Faku is expected to hold on to the post and ANC MP Herbert Vilakazi is expected to be deployed to the East Rand. Deputy Education Minister Smangaliso Mkhatshwa is poised for Pretoria’s unicity and Kenny Fihla is expected to be named as the Johannesburg megacity candidate. ANC officials said the candidate for Durban’s megacity was still a matter of a debate. According to the ANC’s local government manifesto all councillors will sign a code of conduct requiring them to: regularly report back to their constituencies; fight corruption in tendering, hiring and other government functions; and declare all their assets and business interests. – Own Correspondent
