WELL diggers have unearthed a mass grave in a central Angolan village which was the scene of clashes between government troops and rebels, official radio reported this week. The grave, containing an undetermined number of skeletons, was discovered in the village of Catabola, about 700km southeast of the capital Luanda. The slaughter of those in the grave was carried out when Unita rebels held Catabola, the radio said. The village has changed hands several times in Angola’s civil war. At least 25 000 people were killed at Kuito in 1993, during some of the heaviest fighting that has raged in the southwest African country for most of the past 25 years, according to the United Nations. – AFP
