HARARE BOY DIES IN FIRESTORM

AN eight-year-old Zimbabwean boy was burned to death after lighting a candle for his father in an illegal petrol dump in Harare. The boy, Brian Alfenti, had been helping his father when a power cut hit the township of Zengeza. The flame from the candle, held near petrol being poured by hand into a minibus tank, set off a chain reaction that ignited the explosion of drums of hundreds of litres of fuel. The child’s father would be charged with culpable homicide and illegally hoarding fuel for a fleet of minibuses which he ran. Zimbabwe is in the grip of a severe fuel crisis. – AFP
