The Liberian team has come back with a bang recently beating the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier and beating Cape Verde 3-0 in the preliminary round of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Liberia have visited South Africa once before but not to play the home nation. They were here for the 1996 African Cup of Nations, but were eliminated in the first round. They failed to qualify for two countinental cups in Burkina Faso in 1880 and Ghana and Nigeria this year.
The match should not be viewed as a walk in the park for Bafana Bafana. The West Africans boast a number of quality players, like player/coach George Weah the 1995 African and world player of the year who also bankrolls the team Princedaye, who plays in France, and Louis Creyton, who plays in Switzerland.
The squad contains eight international players and 10 players who play in the domestic league.
Liberia’s preparations were disrupted by flight delays they began trickling into South Africa late on Wednesday night. The following day they went to training camp with eight members of their squad missing.
Their recent results speak for themselves and Bafana Bafana should not expect an easy match come Reconciliation Day.
