MAFU GETS AMNESTY FOR MURDERS

THE Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) this week granted amnesty to safety and liaison department permanent secretary Dumisani Mafu on eight counts of murder. Mafu, 43, was also granted amnesty for a number of other offences, including five counts of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives. In 1986, Mafu planned an attack on a building and a police station in Umtata in which at least nine people died. The amnesty committee was satisfied that the incidents had been committed within the political framework of the time and that Mafu had made full disclosure.
