THE South African Revenue Service (SARS) has cracked a fraud ring involving its employees, importers, retailers, lawyers and money launderers, SARS commissioner Pravin Gordhan said this week. The announcement follows a raid on 25 tax officials’ homes by an SARS team and the South African Police’s crack anti-crime Scorpion unit. Gordhan warned in November that tax fraud was among the authority’s key priorities and warned it was on a campaign to root out tax corruption in the public and private sector. – Reuters
