A 76-year-old American attempting to become the oldest person to sail alone around the world was rescued by a container ship after his yacht sank off South Africa’s southwest coast. Dave Clark, from Florida, arrived in Cape Town about a month ago on his yacht Mollie Millar, accompanied by his dog Mickey, after setting out from Fort Lauderdale. He raised money by playing his clarinet and saxophone to crowds of people at Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. He left Cape Town on Tuesday but had to abandon his yacht within hours when it began taking on water north of Saldanha Bay. Clark was picked up by the Safmarine Container ship E’Monti, but his dog drowned when it wriggled out of a harness as it was being pulled up to the container ship, he said. – AFP
