SENEGAL ORDERS INQUIRY INTO KILLINGS

PRESIDENT Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal on Monday ordered a judicial inquiry into the killing of 13 civilians in troubled Casamance province last week. The 13 hauliers were attacked and killed by a gang of about 20 men near Bonna, some 100km northeast of the regional capital Ziguinchor. Armed separatists in Casamance have waged war against the central government since 1982 but, as with many recent incidents, it was unclear if Friday’s killings were the work of political extremists or common criminals. – Reuters
