BRAZIL POLICE QUASH 7-HOUR REVOLT

BRAZILIAN riot police have stormed a youth detention centre to quash a bloody 7-hour revolt by more than 300 juvenile inmates that left one guard dead and at least a dozen people injured. The riot is the fifth at Franco da Rocha in a year and follows Saturday’s death of four juvenile inmates who were burned alive during a riot at a detention centre in Brazil’s northeastern state of Alagoas. It also comes less than a month after Brazil’s biggest-ever riot by 20 000 adult prisoners in 27 Sao Paulo jails that left 19 people dead. – Reuters
