ESKOM PRIVATISATION ON TABLE

DRAFT legislation aimed at privatising state electricity firm Eskom has been tabled in parliament. Eskom’s transmission, distribution and generation divisions are expected to become separate entities. The formation of different generating companies is envisaged with private sector participation linked to the bringing on board of independent power producers. South Africa aims to restructure the country’s four big parastatals – defence group Denel, power utility Eskom, transport group Transnet and phone firm Telkom – in an exercise to raise R40bn by 2004. – Reuters
